The Dollhouse....Painted!

Thanks for coming to check out our updated dollhouse!
If you haven't seen our progress over the months, feel free to check out our dollhouse project button on the right side of the blog....I am also recapping some in this post.

Believe it or not, dollhouses have the possibility of being as intense, expensive and involved as a real house remodel. We decided not to take that road, and wanted to decorate our own furniture and re-do it in a fun, inexpensive {but pretty} way that is kid friendly.

What we did:
1) Painted the house in a new color scheme entirely
2) Collected and painted some furniture over the span of a few months
3) Bought a puppy Calico Critter set to live in our house.
4) Replaced roof fabric with shingles
5) Replaced fabric on walls and floor with floral fabric and carpet accordingly

We still have to:
6) Continue adding to our furniture collection...we want to buy a bed and other accents
7) Buy a cow Calico Critter family to join the dogs
8) Keep having fun

If you go to eBay and type in "dollhouse furniture", you will find anything from Fisher Price plastic chairs that are a few dollars to vintage tables and other items costing hundreds of dollars.
                                  $$$.$$ doesn't = kid friendly (at least not for my 1 & 3 1/2 year old)

Our dollhouse is clearly not a "period" or "collectible" type of dollhouse {much to my husband's dismay}, but meant just for fun and good memories.

Back when we found our dollhouse at an antique mall, it was a lonely, dark and vacant thing sitting on the floor of a booth with a bunch of random things. We had gone there with the goal of finding a dollhouse, and had already passed by a few before we saw this one.
This was it!

Pinterest is full (of course) with a bunch of ideas about dollhouses, and DIY dollhouse stuff, but I didn't want something the size of a bookcase....it had to be:

1) A reasonable size...not too big, or small
2) Sturdy...nothing rickety
3) Decent rooms and a spark of character
4) Noel approved (hope's a baby so she doesn't really care)

It passed all of those requirements, and was calling out to me for a makeover.

The balcony detaches, and the doors on the bottom slide open and closed.

Over the months, we started collecting some dollhouse furniture and painting it together.
I would search eBay and thrift stores from time to time.

I would ask Noel what colors she wanted to paint the things we bought. Sometimes, I was able to steer her away from the cobalt blue paint I have, and sometimes I let her have her way.

We visited the fabric store and found a fabric she liked for the walls.
She settled on a pretty rose fabric, after I convinced her the Minnie Mouse fabric might not be best...lol

Photobucket

I used the fabric pieces that were on there already as templates for cutting out the new pieces...it was SO easy this way. To adhere the fabric on the walls, I took clear Allene's glue and painted it on with a paintbrush. The fabric stuck easily and very well.

We primed the entire house with Valspar paint + primer. This covered the dark teal and brown very well.It took 2 coats, and luckily my husband painted the second coat while I did shingles.

Noel picked the color of paint for the border...she was very clear she wanted a PINK house. The shade we chose is called Peach Whisper by Valspar. We only bought a sample jar, and had more than enough left over.

She told me where the kitchen and bathroom were to be...she's a little like me, I think
(very opinionated)

I added some cardstock accents on the front of the house with the Allene's glue again.
Cutting out cardstock was a great option because it was a quick way to add a pretty pattern and pop of color.

I visited Lowes just before Christmas and the salesman had a soft heart for my story about making over my daughters dollhouse for Christmas. He searched high and low to hook me up with a discount carpet remnant. I was so happy about that, and brought it home and cut pieces out in the dimensions of the floor. {Let me warn you..cutting carpet is tough and messy}

Photobucket

One thing I knew that had to go was the ugly fabric lining the roof. From the beginning I envisioned shingles. My husband and I worked til 3am on Christmas morning to finish all of the last details on the house. I have a new appreciation for dollhouse makers, and roofers ;)

I used 2 5x5 tiles for the bathroom and kitchen sections of the house. The tiles easily come out if we ever want to change the layout of the house one day. You can find tile for less than a dollar if you search for it...or maybe find a friend in the middle of a remodel- they might have an extra tile laying around too.

For the last little details, we found some appliques in the sewing and clearance sections of the craft store and adhered those to the wall.

Also, don't pass up the beading or floral sections of your craft store because sometimes you can transform a pendant to be a frame on a wall, or  another decorative accent somewhere in the house.

Our furniture will always be changing and added to.
We still have some things to add to the walls, and as the girls get older, we will be able to do new things. I've already learned my sea shell "vase" with fake flowers is not something a 1 year old appreciates, so it is already gone.

Our puppy family is happily enjoying the imaginary fire, and anticipating having the little cow family, whom I mentioned before, move in with them soon.

Isn't the little handmade rug so cute...I got it here!

Thanks for checking up on the makeover on our dollhouse!
It will be continually changing as our girls grow up.

PS..they woke up Christmas morning and played with it all day....

it is now a daily favorite

More Dollhouse Furniture

If you've been here a while, you may know we are building a dollhouse and decorating our own furniture. You can read other posts about our dollhouse adventures here, here, and here. :)

This week, we added a cabinet, small bench, and wing-back chair to our house.
The yellow kitty and puppy fabric was the inspiration.
If you'd like a custom painted chair for your dollhouse, I have those in my shop!

Enjoy!

Antique heaven...found our dollhouse!

Pardon the pictures...99% are from my cell phone ;)

Yesterday was a fun-filled day taking my husband to the chiropractor on base, and also stopping by a gigantic antique mall in Goodyear, Arizona called The Brass Armadillo.
I highly recommend going if you have an afternoon to kill and love antiques! I could have stayed all day browsing, but we had our two little beauties with us, so we were lucky to have stayed a little over an hour.
I plan on going back soon...

The place was full of everything you could think of...antiques, collectibles, furniture, picture frames...I confirmed that I have an obsession with chairs.  The prices were amazing too...

 a cute dollhouse...but a little flimsy...

need a license plate??

and then....there it was.....
I knew it when I saw it.
That balcony screamed out at me "CHARACTER", and I picked it up to find it was well-built, solid wood and very sturdy....a little heavy even! It was just what we wanted...perfect size, not too big...

I searched for the ticket price, and {after pricing dollhouses for a while) was scared to see the a 3 digit number, but was glad it was only $29! A total steal, if you ask me!

We kept walking, and I was scanning the booths high and low pretty swiftly, because my daughters were running out of patience. On a top shelf in another booth, I looked up and saw something I didn't intend on buying, but I just couldn't resist...
and it was only $10!

We brought the things home, and I set them on the kitchen table...before I could blink, Noel was using her little Snow White and Aurora figures to play. I even snapped a quick video when she didn't know ;)

The house needs a little work...updating...roof, floor and walls need some TLC....we are coming up with ideas, and will share more furniture with you soon ;)

Customizing doll house furniture is so fun, and I will probably be posting some ready-to-personalize furniture in case anyone would like something for their dollhouse or a gift.

Our Created Dollhouse: The Long Bench

I'll never forget when I was little, we read a book entitled: The Borrowers.
I remember being fascinated with the idea of little people who use thimbles for stew pots, and pin cushions for furniture.

My remembrance of that book was ignited recently when one of our family's favorite movie producers/writers/animators released a movie called Arietty.

Studio Gibly releases some of the most beautifully drawn, written and family-friendly movies out there. My Neighbor Totoro, and Whisper of The Heart are two of my favorites.
 Arietty is no exception.

The story tells about Arietty, her mother, and father....a "borrowing" family.

They live underneath the Bean household, and "borrow" only things the Bean family won't miss, such as a cube of sugar that will last Arietty and her family for weeks. They go on borrowing expeditions in the evening when the Bean household is asleep.
Double-stick tape allows for spiderman-like capabilities down walls and curtains, as the borrowers travel throughout the house to find the things they need.
The tale gets exciting when a young boy living in the house discovers them.

In the story, there is a dollhouse.

This house was built lomg ago by the boy's grandfather who believed in borrowers. They never use this house, but it is equipped with a mini working stove, antique furniture and dishes.

We've slowly been making progress on our dollhouse furniture, most recently finishing the long bench. We have several other pieces in progress, but I have to go slowly since my 3 year old is a busy bee! Also, she got burned out on projects for a few days, and I never want to force her to do projects.

Luckily, when this furniture arrived in the mail, she begged me to paint it! I let her paint the base colors, and then after she went to bed, I added a few extras.

(Sorry for the poor picture...it was at night)
and these were taken with the camera held above my head :)

DIY Craft Caddy and Beginnings of "Our Created Dollhouse"

Thank you for reaching my blog, and I hope you will enjoy whatever posts you find to read.
I appreciate all of my 200 facebook fans...I was excited to reach that milestone, and just really like having the opportunity to talk creativity with anyone who chooses to participate.

I am a mom, Marine wife and I like the blogging world, but don't know too much about it yet. I think of it as a virtual diary type thing I can use as an outlet while I work to be a stay at home mom.
I know that is the same spiel many bloggers have, and its hard to be unique in this world of blogging. All I can say is I hope you will stay and become a bloggy friend of mine.

You've caught my blog at a transition time right now, as I am preparing to revamp my page to look exactly how I want it. I envision something much more creative and pretty than the blue stripes you see as my background. I plan on having easy buttons for visitors to find the topics I like to talk about most.

"Our created KITCHEN"--all things food...I strive to feed my family real food
"Our created CRAFTS"-- all things DIY and family friendly
"Our created FAMILY"--personal stories/events
 "Life Created PHOTO"--my photography hobby
and a couple more ideas are in the works...

One of the most exciting things this blog will be about is "Our Created DOLLHOUSE".. this will include custom, hand-drawn paper dolls as well.
I think having fun with paper dolls will be a fun creative time for us to spend together...away from anything electronic.

We are starting a dollhouse from the ground up. I am still pending on the idea of what our house structure will be (a kit of from scratch), but we have started brainstorming furniture and fun inspiration ideas for the house.

This past week my 3 year old had fun painting her chairs...but before I get to that, I want to show you a craft caddy I made in about 15 minutes using recycled materials we had laying around. You can do this too and it is so easy!

The super nice thing about this caddy is that it hold tall things like:
SCISSORS
COLORED PENCILS
MARKERS
PAINT BRUSHES

There are some caddies you can buy, but they don't hold tall things very easily. Also, why spend the cash, when you can make something for free?

Before we started eating more of a real food diet, I used to buy crystal light. I had several of the containers I was going to recycle, but saved 4 of them for this project.

I wrapped the top of them with a cute paper tape I had.

Find a cheap hanger you get free at department stores, and cut of the last few inches on each side with a sharp pair of scissors.

Hot glue the containers in pairs....side by side

Sandwich the hanger with hot glue in between the glued pairs.

This caddy will be the perfect addition to future dollhouse creating days!

Here are a few of the doll house inspirations we have so far:

and chair painting day:

I let my daughter paint the chairs their base colors, and then after they dried, I added the finishing touches. A few white painting spots, their names, and amaturely-sewn seat covers. ;)
I can't wait to make more with her!
